The Yes We Must Coalition is offering a workshop to college/university teams for Becoming a Trauma-Responsive Campus. The workshop will be led by Dr. Karen Gross, a national leader and educator in this work. As an artist and instructor in the Rutgers School of Social Work, Karen grounds her teaching in neuroscience, psychology, and creative approaches to empathy and healing. The workshop is intended for cross-campus teams — administrators and staff, faculty of all disciplines, coaches, art gallery directors, etc. — to learn about how trauma affects students and what campuses can do about it. Campus teams of 2–6 people will learn together and each school will create a campus action plan utilizing concrete micro and macro strategies. The two-session workshop will take place on February 13 and February 27, 2023, at 3:00–4:30 pm ET.
What Is Involved?
The workshop will consist of two 90-minute virtual gatherings in Zoom on Mondays February 13 and February 27, 2023, at 3:00–4:30 pm Eastern. Campus teams will complete a pre-workshop exercise and also a team assignment in between sessions.
Who Should Attend?
Teams from all Yes We Must Coalition member schools and other colleges/universities who share our commitment to increasing the success of students from low-income backgrounds are invited. The workshop content and activities are relevant whether your school has already initiated related programming or is only just considering it. Campus teams will participate together in the workshop sessions and develop contextualized on-campus strategies at the macro and micro level.
Teams must consist of 2–6 members. Suggested team members include administrators and staff, faculty of all disciplines, coaches, and art gallery directors.
Campus Team Outcomes:
- Understand how trauma affects students and what to do about it by exploring diverse strategies at the macro and micro level.
- Meet colleagues at Yes We Must Coalition member schools and other colleges/universities who share common goals and contexts for advancing success of all students and stimulate collaborative work on strategies for becoming a trauma-responsive campus.
- Develop a plan that expands strategies on your campus.
- Leave with an invitation to participate in a post-meeting virtual Community of Practice to assist one another with plan implementation.
How to Register and Cost for Participating
Cost for a Campus Team of at least 2 and up to 4 members is $300 for Yes We Must Coalition institutional members; cost for a team from non-YWMC institutions is $400. For teams larger than 4, up to 2 additional members may join at a cost of $75 per additional member. Team registration deadline is Tuesday, January 31. To register, one college/university representative should complete the online Registration Form below, providing names, titles/roles, and email contacts for team participants. Payment must be made at time of registration through the PayPal link at the bottom of the online form. Registrants will be sent links to the Zoom workshop sessions as well as the pre-workshop exercise to complete and return.
Workshop Leader
Karen Gross is an educator, author, artist, lawyer and former college president. Her newest adult book, Trauma Does Not Stop at the School Door (released by Teachers College Press June 2020), focuses on how to create trauma responsive educational institutions. She designed all the illustrations in this book. It was named one of top five education book releases in June 2020 and won the 2021 DKG International Educators Book of the Year Award. She is co-authoring a new book tentatively titled Mending Education (Fall 2023) with Harvard Medical School Professor Dr. Ed K.S. Wang.
