The Why and How of Integrated Liberal Arts and Business Curriculum — Dissemination Workshop Virtual Series
Held via Zoom
The Yes We Must Coalition and Coker University, Keuka College, and Saint Elizabeth University — three member schools that are grantees of a Teagle Foundation Liberal Arts and the Professions award — hosted a virtual workshop series in January 2021 to share what has been learned by the grantee schools that have implemented the Teagle Foundation grant on their campuses, to help attendees develop action plans for their own Business curriculum and to provide a follow-up support structure via a Liberal Arts/Business Curriculum Community of Practice. Pairs of faculty – one from business and one from a liberal arts area – from 22 other YWM member schools attended the four 90-minute sessions, drafted integrated projects for their business programs, and participated in a post-series Community of Practice meeting. In the first session, Teagle Foundation Program Director Loni Bordoloi Pazich described the purpose of the Teagle project description and its importance for the low-wealth students we serve. To engage participants in the grantees’ impact on students so far, a panel of students from the grantee schools described the liberal arts approaches they have experienced in their business courses and what they have gained. In the second session, the grantee schools described their curricular revisions as detailed examples of integrative work by cross-disciplinary faculty. In the third session, grantees shared concrete guidance on sustainability and assessment considerations and using campus and regional resources. Throughout the series, participants engaged with one another in small cross-institutional break-out groups facilitated by faculty from the grantee schools. By the final meeting, the participating pairs developed, refined, and shared an outline of their integration of liberal arts ideas with next steps for implementation. In May 2021, a virtual Community of Practice meeting was held to discuss progress and challenges for participants in implementing their plans. Thanks to the Teagle Foundation, the Yes We Must Coalition and the grantee schools are able to provide continued consultation for schools that participated in the series as well as for any member schools interested in developing curriculum and curricular approaches that integrate liberal arts learning in business programs.
