Marcia Hawkins, Ph.D.

Marcia Hawkins, Ph.D., became the 19th president of Union College-KY on July 1, 2012. She came to Union from Fort Worth, TX, where she held various positions of authority at Texas Wesleyan University; was president of the Texas Independent College Foundation; and served as assistant director of the Botanical Research Institute of Texas. In addition, she was vice president for advancement for the National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education and was a banker with Texas Commerce Bank.

As the proud granddaughter and great-granddaughter of West Virginia coal miners, Dr. Hawkins has strong roots in Appalachia and was the first in her family to pursue a college degree. She studied part-time at a community college and followed that by evening classes for several years, all while working full-time and taking care of her home and family. She earned a BBA in Finance and a Ph.D. in Transatlantic History from the University of Texas at Arlington, and a Master of Science in Education from Texas Wesleyan University.

Dr. Hawkins serves on the executive committees of the Appalachia College Association (ACA), the Appalachia Athletic Conference (AAC) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. She also serves on the board of the North American Association of Methodist Schools, Colleges and Universities and on the board of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
